Scotties Day 6 Review

Day 6 at the Scotties – Thursday, February 21

The morning draws returned today with one of the best match ups in the round robin with two undefeated teams facing off - Manitoba and Ontario.

9 am Draw #12

The Scores

Shumay (Saskatchewan) 7
Nedohin (Canada) 5
Jones (Manitoba) 9
Homan (Ontario) 7

Jill Shumay made an upset as she beat Heather Nedohin 7-5 to stay in playoff contention. They came from behind with a lot of steals.  They got 4 straight 1 point steals and ran Nedohin out of rocks in the 10th end.  The second game in the return of the morning draw saw Manitoba play Ontario.  Manitoba beat Ontario 9-7.  This was the first loss for Ontario.  They were on a 31 game winning streak. Both teams traded misses and good shots. Homan made an amazing hit through the tightest port ever to set up 3 but she had just given up a 4 the end before.  The best player of this draw was Jennifer Jones at 93%.

2 pm Draw #13

The Scores

Arsenault (Nova Scotia) 9
Birt (PEI) 6
Crawford (New Brunswick) 9
Moore (Alberta) 3
Galusha (Northwest Territories/Yukon) 7
Ross (Quebec) 8
Devereaux (Newfoundland & Labrador) 4
Scott (BC) 7

Team Arsenault beat Team Birt 9-6 in 9 ends.  Andrea Crawford had a strong game today against Team Kristie Moore.  Crawford won 9-3 in 7 ends after getting 3 in the 1st and stealing 4 more points in ends 2-4.  Team Galusha was just edged out by Team Ross by an 8-7 score. Kerry Galusha almost came back in this game with several steals and pushed it to an extra end, but Ross stole in the extra end for the win.  Kelly Scott beat Team Devereaux 7-4 in 9 ends.  Kelly stole 1 point in 2 ends to make the small difference.  The best player in this draw was Jen Baxter from Nova Scotia at 94%.

7:30 pm Draw #14

The Scores

Scott (BC) 9
Shumay (Saskatchewan) 2
Ross (Quebec) 1
Jones (Manitoba) 7
Moore (Alberta) 3
Nedohin (Canada) 5
Homan (Ontario) 6
Arsenault (Nova Scotia) 5

It was a convincing win by Kelly Scott to stay at 3 losses.  She beat Jill Shumay in 8 ends.  The difference was the 4 in 3 by Scott.  Shumay dropped to 4 losses which may put her out of the playoffs. Jones won in convincing style to stay undefeated over Quebec 7-1 in 7 ends.  Jones stole 1 in 4 and 2 in 5 before Ross's point in the 6th.  In the battle of Alberta, Nedohin came out on top with a 5-3 win.  It was close throughout the game and the scoreboard only showed 1's and 0's!  Nedohin stole 1 in the 10th end to win it.  Rachel Homan won a close game over Mary-Anne Arsenault 6-5.  It came down to the last shot in the 10th when Arsenault hit the Red Rock in the top 4-foot and rolled into open ice.  Homan hit it and rolled for 4th shot.  Homan got 2 in that end.

Scotties Day 5 Review

Day 5 at the Scotties – Wednesday, February 20

2 pm Draw #10

The Scores

Nedohin (Canada) 5
Jones (Manitoba) 8
Galusha (Northwest Territories/Yukon) 6
Birt (PEI) 7
Devereaux (Newfoundland & Labrador) 7
Crawford (New Brunswick) 10
Shumay (Saskatchewan) 2
Homan (Ontario) 8

Heather Nedohin's perfect record has been snapped by a team who still has a perfect record.  Manitoba and Jennifer Jones defeated Heather's rink 8-5.  Jones stole 1 twice in ends 5 and 8.  The steals were the difference in the game. Suzanne Birt was a winner over Kerry Galusha by a final score of 7-6.  Birt stole 1 in 8 to make the small difference.  Stacie Devereaux lost her game against Andrea Crawford 10-7.  This coming off Devereaux's 8-3 win over Kristie Moore.  Crawford stole 2 in 4, right after she got her 2.  Jill Shumay has just lost their 3rd game in a row with a 8-2 loss to Ottawa's Rachel Homan.  Ontario stole 1 in the 5th and got 4 points in the 8th for the win.  Lisa Weagle was tied for the best of all the players curling at 91%.  The lead on Saskatchewan, Jinaye Ayrey curled 77%.  Ayrey curled the best on Team Saskatchewan.

7:00 pm Draw #11

The Scores

Galusha (Northwest Territories/Yukon) 3
Moore (Alberta) 9
Arsenault (Nova Scotia) 7
Devereaux (Newfoundland & Labrador) 6
Scott (BC) 9
Birt (PEI) 8
Crawford (New Brunswick) 8
Ross (Quebec) 4

Kristie Moore from Grand Prairie, Alberta finally won her first game 9-3 in 8 ends over Kerry Galusha.      Moore got 2 3's in ends 1 and 5 to make the difference.  We now have no teams with 0 wins!  Mary-Anne Arsenault won her game 7-6 in 11 ends.  It was an exciting game and the board was filled with 1's and a 3.  Nova Scotia stole 1 three consecutive times.  Devereaux got 3 in 9 and stole 1 in 10 to send it into an extra.  Heather Martin was the best out of all the curlers during this draw.  She was curling 90%.  Jennifer Baxter, Martin's counterpart curled 74%.  The BC vs PEI game was back and forth all night with lots of rocks in play. Kelly Scott somehow won the game with a steal in the 10th end against PEI.  I didn't see the last rock so I can't comment on it.  BC scored 2 in the 9th and stole 1 in the 10th.  Diane Gushulak was filling in at lead for the third straight game for Sarah Wazney, who wasn't even at the KRock centre.  I hope she feels better soon.  Andrea Crawford came back from 4-3 down and took 5 in the 9th end to win the game over Quebec 8-4 in 9.  Crawford's team had 5 red rocks on the 4 foot that scored.  That 5 was the difference in this game. The win keeps Crawford in contention for the playoffs but probably drops Ross out of the playoff race.

Watch tomorrow for…
Battle of the undefeated at 9 am tomorrow should be the best match of the day with Manitoba and Ontario facing off.  Saskatchewan needs a win against Canada to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Shumay rink have a tough day with a game against BC in the evening draw as well.
